Irem, tell us about your journey so far. What brought you to Trench Group? Before joining HSP, I studied Business Administration (BWL) in Paderborn and Magdeburg. Although I was always very interested in topics like logistics and mathematics, I didn’t have any real contact with technical fields at the time. My studies then took me to Turkey and the USA for longer stays. Even before that I had been in the States alone as an au pair. That showed me that I like being brave and trying new things. When I was about to finish my master’s degree, I asked myself: What’s next?
At that time, I was already working as a working student at Siemens Healthineers, which gave me more contact with technical topics. I knew that these topics interested me, and I was also aware that I was looking for a new challenge. That’s why I started a technical job at HSP without having the technical know-how.

What exactly are your tasks as a Junior Cost Value Engineer?
My main task is to keep an eye on manufacturing costs. To do this, I have to translate every single step of our projects processes and products into numbers. This involves both the manufacturing processes and material procurement. Part of my job is to closely coordinate with various departments such as Lean Management (process optimization) and Purchasing. We discuss new and existing projects in detail to find optimization potentials. In the end it’s about how we can become faster and better. For this it is important that all numbers come together in one place to make them transparent and comparable.

Was it challenging for you to start the job without technical know-how?
Our products are so complex and specialized – it was quite overwhelming at the beginning. However my team closely supported me and kept encouraging me to stay on track. I was allowed to accompany the projects in production for weeks to develop a deep understanding. You just have to be patient. Gradually, I got an overview. Therefore, I would advise everyone to take a brave step out of their comfort zone. I realized that there is always something better waiting on the other side.

What excites you most about your job?
The variety. Every day is different. Above all, it is not just a desk job, even though it might sound like it at first. Of course, I work a lot with Excel spreadsheets, but since we are a manufacturing company, I am also on the shop floor a lot. I look at the products on-site, exchange ideas with colleagues, and work on innovations. I can directly see the impact of my work – on the team, but also on the customer. That’s pretty cool.

Where do you want to go professionally?
This is my first job, and I am still learning a lot.
My goal is to further expand my expertise and eventually manage even larger projects. I think it’s great that we at Trench Group are becoming more and more international, diverse, and dynamic.
My dream would be to go to a location like Canada for a few months someday to further expand my knowledge and network with colleagues there. Then I could combine my love for travel with my profession.
