Trench is a recognized world leader in the design and manufacture of dry type air-core reactors. Since decades Trench is supplying air-core reactor for Power Quality and FACTS applications to utility and industry customers worldwide.
The increased in-feed of renewable energy creates new challenges for the balance and stability of electrical grids worldwide. More and more utility customers invest into power quality and FACTS system and value Trench air-core reactors as a core components for these applications.
Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) increase the reliability of AC grids and reduce the delivery costs. They improve quality and efficiency of power transmission by supplying inductive and capacitive reactive power to the grid. Trench’s air-core reactors help customers to achieve these targets by a proven design that is customized to every individual design.

Main Features
Reactors for FACTS
Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) increase the reliability of AC grids and reduce power delivery costs. They improve quality and efficiency of power transmission by supplying inductive and capacitive reactive power to the grid. Depending on the technology of the FACTS device different types of reactors are used. e.g.:
FOR CONVENTIONAL STATIC VAR SYSTEMS (SVCs):
- Thyristor-controlled shunt reactors (TCR). The compensating power is changed by controlling the current through the reactor by means of the thyristor valves.
- Thyristor-switched capacitor reactors (TSC)
- Filter reactors
FOR STATIC SYNCHRONOUS COMPENSATORS USING IGBT VALVES (VSC) FOR POWER CONTROL:
- Line/phase reactors
FOR MSC(DN) CIRCUITS:
- Filter reactors
- Damping Reactor
FOR SC:
- Damping reactors
FOR TCSC:
- Thyristor-controlled parallel reactor
THYRISTOR CONTROLLED SHUNT REACTORS
Thyristor Controlled Shunt Reactors (TCR) are extensively used in static VAR systems in which reactive VARs are adjusted by thyristor circuits. Static VAR compensator reactor applications normally include:
- Thyristor controlled shunt reactors (TCR): The compensating power is changed by controlling the current through the reactor by means of the thyristor valves.
- Thyristor-switched reactors (TSR)
- Thyristor switched capacitor reactors (TSC)
- Filter reactors (FR)
