Three Questions for Sascha Bohdziewicz: Insights into the new 24/7 shift model at HSP Germany

Sascha Bohdziewicz is a CNC Machinist and has been part of the HSP Germany team at the Troisdorf site for twelve years. In the turning shop, he creates the CNC programs for machining the bushings on the lathe. To meet the rapidly growing demand for high-voltage grid components, Sascha has been working in a fully continuous shift operation since January 2026, together with around 60 colleagues: he works two early shifts, two late shifts, two night shifts and then has four days off.

We spoke with Sascha to learn more about his role and everyday life in the new 24/7 shift model. As a works council member, he was also actively involved in its introduction.

Hi Sascha, what is your role at HSP Germany?

Sascha: I am a CNC Machinist in the turning shop, where we manufacture high-voltage bushings. My focus is on turning and machining the active part of the bushings – the core component of our products. This means programming the machines, creating the machining programs, and then manufacturing the parts according to technical drawings.

I also handle quality control myself: I measure and inspect every single part. What I particularly enjoy is that we have single-part production, which means there is always variety. Sometimes the machine is already running when I arrive, and I monitor the ongoing process. Other times I start straight away with something new – checking a drawing, verifying a program or completing a different step. It is simply never monotonous here.

What is special about working at the Trench Group?

Sascha: We are a global technology leader in high-voltage bushings, and I am really proud of that. You can feel how fast we are growing: every month I meet new colleagues or see new machines being delivered. I was even able to watch live on screen when we opened our new plant in the USA.

That growth also shows Trench Group is a future-oriented company where nobody has to worry about their job. To keep up with the rising demand, we introduced our new 24/7 shift model. As a works council member, I was involved in the negotiations from the very beginning. We worked closely with the management to make sure that everyone had the support and preparation they needed. And wherever the model did not fit someone’s personal situation, we found alternative solutions together. That worked really well.

What motivates you to start the day?

Sascha: I really enjoy being a CNC Machinist. Every day brings a new task, a new component or a new program. And I know exactly what I am contributing to: we supply energy grids around the world and help drive the energy transition forward.

The new shift model has also been a positive change for my everyday life. After twelve years in a traditional three-shift system, I now work in a forward-rotating rhythm with a maximum of two night shifts in a row, followed by four days off. I also work fewer days per cycle, which makes a real difference.

Next to that, I can plan better because I know my shifts weeks in advance. That makes it much easier to organize my private time. And anyone who wants to pick up extra shifts during their days off can volunteer and receive additional pay. For me, the bottom line is clear: more free time, better planning, and I feel great.
